Back in India, Sawaki reaches Varanasi and returns to Delhi, then begins the long bus journey west. A chance companion and a mistaken-arrest scare in Pakistan derail him.

Crossing from Iran into Turkey, Sawaki reaches Istanbul, then Greece and onward through Italy, Spain and Portugal—dealing with dwindling cash and a stolen passport as the journey closes in on its end.
